Being Immovable

Christian Bible Teaching By Sharon Hood

1 Corinthians 15:58  “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, IMMOVABLE.”

After I travel to and from a place many times I usually start trying to figure out a shorter route. When you know the way well, you can begin to take back roads which avoid traffic, construction and traffic lights.

Now comes a tough question. Do you think there is, such a shortcut to holiness?  I think there is, but we must first consider the tradeoff.

Jesus talked about such a tradeoff.  Mark 8:34 “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”

Denying yourself can be a short cut but it is also the tradeoff.  You remember the saying, “No pain, no gain.”  I believe that denying yourself will involve pain and suffering!  Scripture calls us to the opposite of compromise.  From one end of the Bible to the other, God clearly commands His people to stand firm to live apart from the world, to be separate from the world.

For instance, we can deny ourselves self pity when we really want to throw a pity party with the VIP, you know misery loves company.  We can deny ourselves passing on that spicy slice of gossip.  Have you ever noticed how gossip will perk up ears?

We can deny ourselves the last word in an argument and let’s not forget about always having to be right. We can deny our eyes to watch the TV program or movie that we wouldn’t allow our children to view.  Don’t forget about that second glance at the distasteful magazine.  We can deny ourselves the temper tantrum or I like to call “A fit”, you know what I’m talking about, when that ugly drama Momma rears up her ugly head.

Each and every time we “deny” these ungodly situations we are taking up the cross which represents death.  Jesus’ cross cost Him His life, but in our case, it is death to self, death to the flesh, death to our own will.

Have you ever had a day go by without some opportunity to take a divine shortcut to holiness?  I think I know that answer.  The next time we start to ignore the shortcut before us, let’s try to remember what Jesus said about this.
